James Cook’s sailing career began in 1746 as an assistant on a coal ship called Freelove.
IN THE LATE SUMMER OF 1768 he left England on an expedition to the Pacific Ocean. On his return to England, 3 years later, Cook was sent on two more voyages: one to the Antarctic, the other to the Arctic.
Cook was a fantastic sailor. He insisted that his sailors ate cabbage and fresh fruit, and because of this, he became the first captain to save his ship from diseases like scurvy.
Cook made many maps, took regular measurements, and recorded every event of his journeys in detail. The scientists on his ships collected wildlife samples from the lands they visited. In an age before cameras, artists on board made drawings of all the people, plants, and animals they saw to show to people back home.
